Passaic County, with a population of 501,226, has diversified towns, including both urban and rural communities. The southeastern part of the county is the industrial and commercial core while the northwestern area is mostly residential. The county's transportation network includes Interstate 80 and key NJ Transit commuter lines.

Paterson, the county seat, is home to the Great Falls National Historic District. The 70-foot waterfall on the Passaic River convinced Alexander Hamilton that Paterson would be the ideal site for the nation's first true industrial center. The county has a long industrial history, which includes silk production and aviation manufacturing. The area was named a national historic district in 1970.
